Classes of Irises

We only grow bearded irises. Bearded irises are identifiable by the long fuzzy beard located on the falls (lower petals). There are six different classes of bearded irises, each named for its size.

Every year since 1927, the American Iris Society has awarded the Dykes Memorial Medal – named after botanist, horticulturist, gardener, William R. Dykes, author of The Genus Iris – to “the hybridizer of of the outstanding iris variety of each year.” Click here to learn more about Dykes, the Medal and the irises that have won it.
